The new rack-mounted Cooling Tower Control System from ElectroChemical Devices (ECD), USA, is the best option for process plant operators with cooling towers who struggle with the dual demands of consistently reliable operation and reduced maintenance cost.

Water-based wet cooling towers work on the evaporative principle of cooling and are commonly constructed using concrete, steel, or fiberglass. They are extensively used in HVAC systems serving large institutional or commercial buildings, as well as in the process industries. Common issues like rust, scaling, fouling, and other forms of corrosion require chemical treatment with corrosion inhibitors and biocides, which can also generate pollutants.

ECD’s new plug-and-play Cooling Tower Control System (CTCS) is designed to apply the necessary chemicals to prevent corrosion, scaling, and fouling. It includes a built-in biocide timer for ease of maintenance. The system is simple to install, set up, and operate. It integrates control of acid feed, blowdown, and inhibitor feed. Acid feed is controlled via pH monitoring, blowdown via conductivity (TDS), and inhibitor feed on a user-selected time basis.

The highly advanced CTCS features a unique timer-based overfeed function that locks out the blowdown cycle or acid/base feed, triggering a process alarm if these cycles exceed the operator-defined time limit. This helps prevent excessive chemical treatments, protecting the tower, piping, pumps, and other equipment from damage and reducing costs.

The CTCS includes ECD’s C22 Controller, a PHS10 pH sensor, and a CS10 conductivity sensor. The C22 is an intelligent analyzer with control logic and failsafe interlocks to prevent overfeeding. Operators can easily control dosing parameters via a backlit LCD graphical display with membrane touch control. The controller features four SPDT relays and is rated NEMA 4X for outdoor use. An optional digital input card can be added to alarm no-flow conditions for added safety.

The PHS10 and CS10 are robust, insertion-style sensors with signal-conditioned outputs for accurate and noise-free measurements. The PHS10 measures pH from 0 to 14 at up to 80 °C and pressures up to 100 PSI.

The CS10 measures conductivity from 500 µS to 20 mS at up to 80 °C and pressures up to 100 PSI.
